Region History – AIOU Regional Center Sahiwal

The Regional Center Sahiwal of Allama Iqbal Open University was established on 25 November 1988. At the time of its creation, the office was responsible for academic and administrative services across:

  • Seven Tehsils: Arifwala, Pakpattan Sharif, Chichawatni, Sahiwal, Okara, Renala Khurd, Depalpur
  • Three Districts: Pakpattan Sharif, Sahiwal, Okara

This setup provided a strong foundation for extending distance learning opportunities to students in central Punjab.

Geographical Significance of Sahiwal

Sahiwal is often considered the gateway to South Punjab, making it a strategically important location. The district of Pakpattan Sharif is home to the shrine of Baba Farid-ud-Din Ganj Shakar (RA), a highly revered Sufi saint of the subcontinent.

  • River Ravi flows in the north
  • River Sutlej flows in the south
  • Pakpattan Sharif and Okara districts share borders with India (from Depalpur and Pakpattan sides)

This geographical positioning not only highlights the historical value of the region but also enriches its cultural diversity.

Historical and Cultural Heritage

The region is also home to Harappa, an internationally recognized archaeological site located in the Sahiwal Division. Harappa was one of the key cities of the Indus Valley Civilization (3300 BCE – 1300 BCE).

The site continues to attract researchers, historians, and tourists worldwide. Its name is derived from a small nearby village and has become synonymous with one of the oldest urban civilizations in human history.
